On Empowerment....

I am so glad that the session started without the sermon of the boss…. I guess everybody came on time, providing a conducive atmosphere for the learning. I have to congratulate ourselves for such a professional practice.

EMPOWERMENT – seems like a very potent and authoritative word. I have heard it so many times in our seminars, workshops, and even meetings. But, it was only in Organizational Analysis Class that I came to fully understood it, in the widest of perspective.

In the past, I consider empowerment as a simple delegation of authority to carry out certain task. I was wrong. I just lately know that empowerment plays a very important factor in an organization, and I was too lucky that at such an early stage, I came to realize that it’s more than just a delegation of authority and power. It is about giving every member of the organization value, importance and significance, after all, the success of an organization do not depend on one person alone, but of the collaborative effort of its members and leaders.

Just recently, an Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of our annex school was petitioned by all of its teachers for a variety of reasons and I was one of those tasked to conduct investigation and substantiate the allegations. Thanks GOD, it was timely that discussions fall within the context of the scenario we are investigating.

In the course of our investigation, I come to realize and understand fully the substance of our topics, specifically – EMPOWERMENT, THE LION and the BEE, and VISION BUYOUT….I must admit that in the course of classroom discussion, one may not fully understood its lesson until such time that he/she come to experience it in real life situations. Call it LUCK, call it COINCIDENCE; but, that is how things I have at hand recently. I may still have so much to learn, but at this moment, I suppose I have what it takes to understand the crisis our school is facing today. And I owe it to RSG and the OrAn Class.

Empowerment I suppose is not simply exercising your delegated authority to accomplish your achieve something. Certain factors have to be considered, especially human resources because they have the tendency to react, either favorably or negatively to your actions and policies. The value of collaborative effort will certainly overcome common obstacles that usually hinder the attainment of goals and objectives.

The case we are investigation, I suppose is a tangible example of a wrong perception of empowerment. It is just too unfortunate that it has to come these far where harsh actions has to be implemented before she realizes her mistakes – that she has gone beyond the limits of her authority.

At the end of the day, people must understand that there are a lot of factors that must be given due considerations. Policies will be policies; yet somehow, I come to understand that there are times that I have to be flexible and more broadminded to preserve the harmonious relationship with all the members of the organization. After all, I believe that the general attainment of the organization’s goals and objectives, do not just rest on one the palm of one hand, but of the collective effort and the willingness of its members to do their part – that is what EMPOWERMENT is all about.
